CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team walked away with their first win of the season as they defeated Texas Lutheran 3-1 and ended the Pacific Coast Classic 1-3 on the year.
Senior Jessica Finn was named to the 2017 Pacific Coast Classic All-Tournament team as she ended the weekend with 69 assists and 24 digs.
The Sagehens got the win over Texas Lutheran in game one of day two of the Pacific Coast Classic held at Voelkel Gymnasium.
The Sagehens dropped the first set to the Bulldogs 11-25 but rallied back to take a close second set, 25-23 and went on to take sets three and four by the scores of 25-18 and 25-19.
Texas Lutheran was led by Hannah Mikelonis who tallied 12 kills.
The Sagehens fell to Bethel 3-1 in the opening game of the Pacific Coast Classic on Friday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium. Bethel came out and took the first set 24-18 and took a close second set 25-23. The Sagehens came back and dominated set three 25-15 but fell in fourth set by the score of 25-19.
The Sagehens were led by Zwaal who led the team with 14 points and 16 digs. Finn tallied 23 assists. Bethel was led by Tina Hope and Kristin Stern who combined for 22 kills in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer ended day one with a loss to No. 8 ranked UT Dallas in the final game of day one of the Pacific Coast Classic. The Comets won in straight sets as they took set one 25-10, set two 25-19 and set three 25-18.
The Sagehens were led by Makylee Fruge who tallied seven kills. Laney Pope led the team with 13 digs and Finn led with 11 assists. The Comets were led by Emma Wallbrown with nine kills and Kristyn Scott chipped in with seven.
Pomona-Pitzer ended day two of the Pacific Coast Classic with a hard fought loss to No. 17 Millikin on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
The Sagehens came out strong in game one as they took the first set 25-23. The Big Blue rallied and took set two 25-15, set three 25-9 and 25-15 in the fourth set.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by Zwaal who had a team-high 11 kills. Britinie Casillas and Finn each shared a team-high in assists with 12 each and Laney Pope led the team in digs with 16. The Big Blue were led by Alora Goodey who had 15 kills and Erin Syversen with 14.
The Sagehens will next head to Thousand Oaks as they will compete in the California Lutheran Invitational on Friday, September 8th at 12:30 p.m. against Trinity (Tex.) and at 5:00 p.m. against Whitworth.
