CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team is ready to begin 2017 as they host the annual Pacific Coast Classic on September 1st and 2nd at Voelkel Gymnasium.

The Sagehens fell in the Semifinals of the SCIAC Tournament last season and look to get back to the tournament in 2017. The team returns only three seniors in Kate Porter, Natalie Martin and Jessica Finn and just two juniors in Sophie Janssen and Julia Zwaal on what will be a young Sagehen squad for this season.

Finn returns as the primary setter for the Sagehens as she appeared in all 26 matches last season. She collected a team-high 681 assists (7.24 A/S) and had a career-high 224 digs last season. Martin comes in as ad defensive specialist. She appeared in 13 matches and 34 sets in 2016 and tallied 136 digs and 11 assists. Porter appeared in 21 matches last season and provided the Sagehens with 46 kills, 26 digs and 17 blocks.

Zwaal comes in as a big hitter for the Sagehens as she earned Second Team All-SCIAC a season ago. Zwaal led the Sagehens with 301 kills (3.24K/S) and threw in 278 digs, 16 blocks and 18 assists. Janssen enters her junior year as an outside hitter for the Sagehens. She played in 23 matches last season and tallied 66 assists and 281 digs.

Pomona-Pitzer will rely on their younger players this season as they bring back seven sophomores and bring in seven freshmen for this season.

Among those sophomores is reigning SCIAC Newcomer of the Year, Isabel Kelly. Kelly provided the Sagehens with a spark last season during her freshman year as she played in all 26 matches with 255 kills, 113 digs and 55 blocks.

Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong returns after a promising freshman season as she played in 24 matches with 126 kills, 17 digs and 57 total blocks. Jackie Roland and Brooke Carlson also saw significant time during their first collegiate seasons. Roland saw time in 17 matches as a setter and tallied 194 assists to go along with 72 digs. Carlson appeared in 7 matches and 16 sets as a middle hitter as she tallied 13 kills, four digs and five blocks.

The Sagehens will look for big contributions out of Sofia Husein, Zaza Apolinario-Chaplin and Yesim Yurteri in their sophomore seasons this year as well as their seven freshmen in Britnie Casillas, Makylee Fruge, Micah Blackwell, Kayla Krilove, Laney Pope, Aleix Rudy and Sara Ryerson.

The Sagehens will black in four matches this weekend during the Pacific Coast Classic as they kick off their season on Friday against Bethel at 1:30 p.m. and UT Dallas at 6:00 p.m.
