CLAREMONT, CA — The Sagehens set a school record in the distance medley relay, and the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Track and Field team finished the 2017 Rossi Relays in fifth place, Saturday afternoon.
The Sagehens' fifth place finish (48 points) was second among Division III institutions. Host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finished second overall with 66.75 points. Division II Fresno Pacific won the event with 84.75 points.
The distance medley relay team of Abby Gardner, Cat Banobi, Kaile Sauro and Maya Weigel set a new school record of 12:10.80 in taking second to Division II Cal State San Bernardino. The team was highlighted by Weigel's 1600 meter anchor leg in 4:49.
Weigel came back later to run 9:52.24 to take fourth in the 3000 meter run. Her time in the event ranks second in Sagehen history.
Sophie Richards ran 15.08 in the 100 hurdles, the fourth fastest time in program history. Richards came back later to run 66.13 in the 400 hurdles, which is the tenth time in Sagehen history.
Sauro won the long jump (16-3) and Finn won the javelin (130-10). Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong took sixth in the high jump with a final height of 4-11.75.
From the Coach: "This was a terrific meet to close out our preseason," said Head Coach Kirk Reynolds. "We had some very strong performances that will carry us into the SCIAC regular season, starting this coming Saturday. As we continue to work hard and progress, we will see continued additional improvements in our individual and team results."
Next Meet: The Sagehens will host the first SCIAC meet of the year next Saturday at Strehle Track beginning at 10 a.m.
