CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis Team closed out the spring break with a big 6-3 victory over No. 12 University of the South (Sewanee) on Saturday afternoon. This marked their fifth victory over an ITA Top-15 program this season as the Sagehens saw strong performances by Maryann Zhao and Shivani Doraiswami put them ahead of the Tigers.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 6-2 record overall and have gone 3-1 during the spring break.
Zhao and Doraiswami paired up for the first time this season and impressed, winning their no. 2 doubles match 8-4. Carolina Casper and Arianna Chen took down Clementina Davila and Catherine Owen in no. 1 doubles 8-4 as well to give the Hens a 2-0 lead. However, the Tigers took back one point as Haley Tucker and Sara Thompson won the no. 3 doubles over Summer Garrison and Jacinta Chen.
The Tigers managed to tie the match after Davila won no. 1 singles over Casper, but Doraiswami regained the lead for the Hens after winning her no. 4 singles match 6-2 and 6-3. Zhao continued her strong form from doubles with a dominant 6-0 and 6-3 win over Ellie Czura in no. 3 singles and Summer Garrison clinched the match after taking down Christina Merchant in no. 2 singles 6-2 and 6-4. Arianna Chen won the no. 6 singles 6-4 and 6-3. The Tigers salvaged the final remaining point as Haley Tucker edged out Jacinta Chen 7-6 (2) and 6-2.
