RIVERSIDE, CA. – The season got off to a promising start for the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Swim and Dive program as they battled closely with Cal Baptist University on Friday evening, losing closely 174 to 117. The Sagehens had several closes races with the Lancers, with some finishes coming less than a second of one another.
Maddie Kauahi earned a first-place victory in the 50-Yard Freestyle, clocking in at 24.47, just 0.19 seconds ahead of Cal Baptist's Riya Smirnova. She also won the 100 Freestyle at 53.64, just 0.13 seconds ahead of Smirnova. Hannah Zurmuhl also had a solid debut, winning the 100 Butterfly at 1:00.88, a little less than two seconds than teammate Mikaela Nishida who took second at 1:02.69. Mackenzie Cummings won the 200 Individual Medley, timing at 2:18.69 while her teammate Sarah Jin took second at 2:21.02. In the final event of the evening, the Sagehens won the 200 Freestyle Relay as Zurmuhl, Denise Dao, Kate Denend, and Kauahi combined for a time of 1:39.93. Their teammates Alex Gill, Emily Brooks, Kate Eisenbraun, and Annabelle Farnham took second at 1:41.40.
The 100 Breaststroke came down to a tight finish as Gill took second behind Lancers' Mackenzie Mergel with a time of 1:05.53, just 0.13 seconds behind the winner. Alex Werner took second in the 200 Breaststroke in her collegiate debut, finishing in 2:24.64.
