LOS ANGELES, CA. – The No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental 2-0 on Wednesday night at Jack Kemp Stadium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 9-0-1 overall and 5-0 in SCIAC play to remain unbeaten on the season.
The Sagehens were led by seniors Brianna Lau and Bria VarnBuhler who each netted a goal in the win. Senior Isa Berardo got the win in goal and completed their fourth solo shutout of the season with six saves.
Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental both had chances to score early in the first half but some good goalkeeper play from Berardo and Baird kept the score even at 0-0 midway through the first half. The Sagehens got their first goal of the game in the 27th minute as Lau scored in her second-straight match in similar fashion as she blasted a long curling shot from outside the box that fell to the back of the net to allow the Sagehens to play from in front.
Pomona-Pitzer struck again just three minutes later after VarnBuhler came across the ball in the Occidental box and slotted it past the keeper to double up the lead at 2-0 heading into halftime.
The Tigers became very aggressive on offense to start the second half as they tried to chip away at the Sagehens' lead. Berardo came up huge with a few diving saves for the Sagehens to keep the Tigers off of the board while the Sagehen defense spoiled multiple different scoring opportunities for Occidental.
The Sagehens took back control of possession late in the game and were able to eat enough time off of the clock to keep the Occidental offense quiet and came away with the road win.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to CMS for the Sixth Street Rivalry on Wednesday, October 9th at 7:00 p.m.
