ORANGE, CA. – The No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team came away with a 1-0 win on the road against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Chapman on Saturday morning at Wilson Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 6-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC this season.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Anna Ponzio who netted the only goal of the game for the Sagehens in the win. Senior Isa Berardo put up another outstanding performance in goal as they accounted for six saves and came away with another shutout victory. Dating back to last season, Berardo has allowed just one goal in their last 10 SCIAC matches.
Pomona-Pitzer controlled the game against the Panthers as they outshot Chapman 24-9 with 12 shots on target. After scoring 11 goals in their last two matches, the Sagehens needed just one to come away with the win over the Panthers. The Sagehens got their game-winning goal in the 12th minute of the first half after senior Lily Gane played a nice back heel flick to Ponzio who slotted the ball past the keeper for the 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens tried to double their lead against the Panthers as they peppered the keeper all day long but the Chapman goalkeeper was able to come away with 11 saves to keep the deficit at just 1-0.
Chapman had a big chance late in the game to come away with an equalizer as they were awarded a free kick just outside the box in the 90th minute. A great shot by Riley Pidgeon was spoiled by Berardo who got a diving hand on the shot and was able to push the ball away from goal to secure the win for the Sagehens.
Up Next: The Sagehens will return home as they host SCIAC opponent Whittier on Wednesday, September 25th at 4:00 p.m.
