Women's Soccer: No. 13 Sagehens Net 7 Goals In Win Over La Sierra

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 13 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team netted seven goals in a 7-1 rout against non-conference opponent La Sierra on Thursday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens move to 4-0-1 on the year.

The Sagehens were led by senior Lily Gane who scored two goals in the win. Junior Chloe Hamer and senior Bria VarnBuhler also netted goals for the Sagehens while first-years Taylor Venenciano and Charlotte Tapp each scored their first collegiate goals.

The Sagehens turned out another dominate performance at home as they outshot the Eagles 32-2 and had 20 shots on goal.  Pomona-Pitzer got the scoring going midway through the first after a corner by sophomore Emily Tomz found the feet of Gane who netted the first goal of the night for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer got on the board about 10 minutes later as Hamer crossed in a ball to VarnBuhler who finished and doubled the Sagehens' lead at 2-0. The Eagles would then get on the board just before halftime after a chip over the head of the keeper cut the lead down to 2-1 heading into the break.

The Sagehens came out with a strong second half that saw five goals. The first of which came within the first two minutes after Hamer got to the edge of the box and shot one over the keeper to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Eagles committed an own goal in the 52nd minute to extend the lead to 4-1 and the Sagehens struck again in the 56th minute after a quick corner played into senior Brianna Lau crossed in to Venenciano who struck it first time to the side of the goal to push the lead to 5-1 with her first career goal.

Tapp followed up with her first collegiate goal as well in the 63rd minute as she settled in a ball from sophomore Anna Ponzio and chipped a long ball over the head of the keeper for the 6-1 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer capped off the night with a penalty shot from Gane after a hand ball in the box gifted the Sagehens a shot from the spot as Gane completed her brace and put an exclamation point on a season-high seven goals.
