CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team clinched a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason berth with a 2-0 win over Whittier College on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens secure their eighth-straight SCIAC Postseason Tournament appearance and improve to 11-3-2 overall and 8-3-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by freshman Helena Robinowitz and junior Bria VarnBuhler who each had one goal in the win. Junior Brianna Lau had an assist on both goals while junior Isa Berardo notched their fifth solo shutout of the season.
The Sagehens' offense came out firing against the Poets as they tallied 24 shots total in the 90 minutes while the Whittier offense only came up with two for the game. Pomona-Pitzer had chance after chance in the first half but could not get one in the back of the net until the 43rd minute of the match. Robinowitz came away with her first collegiate goal of her career just before halftime as Lau curled a ball into the box that was settled by Robinowitz and poked through the defense to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Pomona-Pitzer doubled its lead in the second half as they scored the second goal of the match as Lau played in another cross that found the foot of VarnBuhler to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute. The Sagehens had more chances to score in the second half as the offense was firing on all cylinders but only came away with the two goals in the win.
The defense put up another impressive performance at home for the Sagehens. After finishing their final home game, the defense has only given up five goals at home with the Sagehens posting a 7-1-1 record at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
