CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team clinched a berth into the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament with a 3-0 win over Occidental on Saturday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens end the regular season with a 9-6-3 overall record and 6-4-3 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were able to play from in front against the Tigers as their offense came alive with a chance to advance to the postseason on the line.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Thornton-Clark curled in the opening goal from right around the corner of the box in the 15th minute. The Sagehens doubled their lead over the Tigers just over a minute later as VarnBuhler squared up a long shot in front of the goal and found the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead just 16 minutes in.
The Sagehens' defense played solid in the first half as they did not allow the Tigers to even attempted a shot on goal as they lead 2-0 at the break.
Pomona-Pitzer continued their dominance over the Tigers into the second half as they scored their third goal of the afternoon as Chloe Hamer played in a through ball to Onderwyzer Gold who played it past the keeper to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 59th minute.
The Sagehens snapped their five-game winless streak when it mattered the most and held off Occidental to punch their ticket to the SCIAC Tournament.
