CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Lacrosse team fell 14-13 in a tight matchup with Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental on Wednesday night at the South Athletics Complex.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Lilly Thomey who tallied a team-high four goals in the loss. Kate Immergluck tallied her first hat-trick of her career with three goals and Sonia Olson notched a hat-trick as well, her fifth of the season.
A tale of two halves for the Sagehens' offense against the Tigers as they netted nine goals in the first half and just four in the second. Pomona-Pitzer opened up the game with back-to-back goals on free position shots by Immergluck and Emma Sheridan to take a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers responded with two goals in a row to tie the game at 2-2 but the Sagehens came back with goals from Thomey and Olson to reclaim a two-goal lead at 4-2 with 21:35 left in the half.
Occidental battled back to cut the lead down to one goal at 6-5 with 9:31 left to go but the Sagehens ended the half with three of the final four goals from Olson, Sophia Silane and Immegluck to take a 9-6 lead heading into the half.
The Sagehens struggled to keep possession early in the second half that resulted in Occidental opening up the second half with three-straight goals to tie the game at 9-9.
Pomona-Pitzer regrouped and responded as Thomey scored the next three goals for the Sagehens but the Tigers came back with three goals in a row to take their first lead of the night at 13-12 with 7:45 left to go. Immergluck tied the game off of a free position shot but the Tigers scored the go-ahead goal after they were down a player with 2:30 left to play.
The Sagehens had an opportunity late to tie the game but a big save by the Tigers' goalkeeper kept Occidental in the lead and gave them the chance to run out the clock and take the narrow win on the road.
