CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team bounced back to their winning ways with a big 81-57 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens swept the Leopards on the season and improve to 15-5 overall and 9-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by freshman Carly Leong who tallied 20 points and five rebounds in the win. Freshman Cam Edward had 11 points while fellow freshman Madison Quan also notched 11 points to go along with six assists and four rebounds. Freshmen Amara Chidom and Vanessa Hsia each had 10 for the Sagehens will Hsia adding eight boards as well to the total.
Pomona-Pitzer owned the boards tonight against La Verne as they outrebounded the Leopards 58-38 and scored 36 points in the paint to La Verne's 20. The Sagehens also forced the Leopards to turn the ball over 19 times in a game which they never trailed.
The Sagehens came out and took an early lead after a Leong three gave the Sagehens a 7-3 start. La Verne came back and cut the lead down to one point at 11-10 with four minutes left to play but the Sagehens maintained their lead as they ended the first with a 16-14 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer extended their lead in the second as the defense stepped up and held the Leopards to just 10 points in the second quarter. The Sagehens held La Verne to just 26% from the field in the second quarter with the Leopards going 0-7 from beyond the arc. Pomona-Pitzer held the Leopards scoreless for the first three minutes of the second quarter and managed to extend their lead to 24-16 after a pair of Chidom free-throws. Pomona-Pitzer held its lead over the Leopards and went into halftime with a ten-point lead at 34-24.
La Verne came out firing from the half and immediately made up some ground on the scoreboard. The Leopards cut the lead down to just six points within the first two minutes of the second half but the Sagehens regrouped and pushed their lead back up to beyond double digits at 42-30 after a freshman Vanessa Hsia layup. The Sagehens added some extra scoring at the end of the third capped off by an Edward three-pointer to extend the lead to 57-42 heading into the fourth.
It was all Sagehens in the fourth quarter as they ended the game outscoring the Leopards 24-15. Pomona-Pitzer kept its foot on the gas and took their largest lead of the game at 81-53 with 1:12 left to play as Pomona-Pitzer got back on track with a big home win over La Verne.
