Women's Basketball: Godfrey Drops 30 As Sagehens Hold On For 67-64 Win Over UC Santa Cruz

CLAREMONT, Ca. – Two clutch free-throws from freshman Emma Godfrey and a blocked last-second shot by freshman Alexa Bayangos lifted the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team to a 67-64 victory over non-conference opponent UC Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-14 overall.

The Sagehens were led by Godfrey who dropped a game-high 30 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season and her fourth 30+ point game this year. Junior Anita Romero also tallied double digits for the Sagehens with 12 points and junior Keilani Ikehara and freshman Renae Tamura each chipped in with nine.

Pomona-Pitzer shot a season-high from the floor in tonight's game against the Banana Slugs at 52.8% (28-53) the only other time this season that the Sagehens were over 50% was on December 16th in their 76-69 win over Pacific at home. The Sagehens really held their ground in the paint as they outrebounded Santa Cruz 39-33 and scored 36 of their points in the paint and limited the Banana Slugs to just 24 points down low.

UC Santa Cruz got on the scoreboard first in the game as they hit the first two shots of the afternoon but the Sagehens quickly erased that deficit with an 8-2 run and were able to hold the lead heading into the second quarter up 10-9.

The Sagehens sparked another run to kick off the second as they opened up on a 9-1 run to take a 19-11 lead with 5:34 left until halftime. Pomona-Pitzer maintained their lead for the rest of the quarter and went into halftime with a 25-18 lead.

Both teams came out of the locker room with an emphasis on scoring the basketball as the two teams combined for 41 points in the third quarter. Pomona-Pitzer fought off the Banana slugs attack early on but Santa Cruz began chipping away at the lead and made an 8-2 run towards the end of the third to cut the lead down to just two points at 36-34. The Sagehens stayed on top and converted on some key baskets late in the third to take a 45-39 lead into the fourth.

Santa Cruz made its run in the fourth quarter as they scored a game-high 25 points and was the only quarter in which they outscored the Sagehens.  The Banana Slugs made it interested as they eventually tied the game at 57-57 after an and-one layup with 3:00 left to play. Santa Cruz went on to take a 64-61 lead over the Sagehens, which was their first lead since the opening minutes of the first quarter with 1:33 to play. However, Godfrey put the Sagehens on her back tonight as she capped off her 30-point night scoring the last six points of the game for the Sagehens including the go-ahead layup and two clutch free-throws to give Pomona-Pitzer a 67-64 lead with nine seconds to play.

Santa Cruz had a chance to tie with a last second three-pointer but Bayangos was able to get a hand on it and rejected the attempt to send the game into overtime as the Sagehens held on for the win.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next continue SCIAC play as they travel to Caltech on Wednesday, January 31 at 7:00 p.m.
