Cal Lutheran Pulls Away From Sagehens In Second Half

Claremont, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran Women's Basketball team held Pomona-Pitzer to only 13 second half points as it pulled away for a 54-34 win on Thursday evening.

With the win, the Regals improve to 13-7 overall and 6-3 in the SCIAC, while the Sagehens fall to 3-17 overall and 1-8 in conference play.

Pomona-Pitzer hung tough early, as it led 9-6 midway through the first half on two three-pointers from junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif. - pictured) and one from freshman guard Ruthie Shapiro (Moraga, Calif.).

Cal Lutheran responded with a 10-0 run to go ahead 16-9, but the Sagehens answered back with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the score 16-16 on Sones' third three-pointer of the half.

Cal Lutheran, though, was able to forge ahead 27-21 at the break on two three-pointers of their own in the final two minutes, and then started the second half on an 11-2 run, capped off by a lay-up from Channing Fleischmann, to take a 38-23 lead.

The Sagehens were unable to fight their way back into the game, as Cal Lutheran's interior play was too tough. The Regals held a 52-28 rebounding advantage and a 20-4 edge in points in the paint.

Cameron Jones had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds for Cal Lutheran, while Fleischmann had seven points and 14 rebounds, and Erica Whitley tallied five points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Sones and Shapiro each had 11 for the Sagehens in the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Redlands for a 5 p.m. tip.
