Claremont, Calif. - The Occidental Women's Basketball team held Pomona-Pitzer to 18.2 percent shooting on its way to a 56-30 win on Thursday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, Occidental moves to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the SCIAC, while the Sagehens slip to 2-12 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Senior forward Asha Gipson (San Diego, Calif.) was a bright spot for Pomona-Pitzer with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds on the day. Makenzie Brandon led all scorers for Occidental with 12 points on 6-9 shooting.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead before junior guard Vanessa Ho (San Francisco, Calif.) ended the scoreless drought with a foul shot with 12:58 remaining. The Sagehens had a 6-0 run late in the half to get within 23-12 on a lay-up from junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) on a fast break, but Crystal Goodwin hit a three-pointer on the final possession of the half for Occidental to give the Tigers a 27-12 lead at the break.

Freshman forward Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska) made one foul shot to start the second half, but Occidental then went on a 13-0 run to stretch its lead to 40-13 and was able to cruise from there.

Pomona-Pitzer did hold Occidental to just 37.3 percent shooting on the other end, including 21.1 percent from three-point territory (4-19), but were done in by the depth of the Tigers, who had 31 bench points to six for Pomona-Pitzer.
