Softball: Sagehens Edged by Tigers

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Pomona-Pitzer Softball had a tough outing Saturday afternoon at Occidental, dropping two games to the Tigers. 

Game One: Occidental 5, Pomona-Pitzer 0

Izzy Deatherage went two for three at the plate and the Sagehens pitchers struck out five, but Pomona-Pitzer couldn't get any runners across the plate, dropping game one to the Tigers.

Deatherage finished the game with a single and a double. Designated player Haylee Sindt singled to right field in the third inning. First baseman Emily Rockhill added a hit in the fourth.

With the Tigers leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Cora Roberts extended Occidental's lead to 3-0 off a RBI infield single. Alexis Funaki hit in two more with a single to left field later that inning.

Bianca Cockrell got the start the circle for the Sagehens, going three and two-thirds innings in her outing while striking out three. Freshman Alondra Reynoso pitched two and a third innings of relief, finishing with two strikeouts. 

Game Two: Occidental 7, Pomona-Pitzer 2

The Sagehens scored first and held on to a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, but the Tigers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

In the top of the first with Kristen Hong on first base after singling to left field, Olivia Campion doubled to left field to bring home Hong for the opening lead. 

After the Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the first, Pomona-Pitzer retook the lead in the top of the next inning. After Baleigh McCuskey got on with a walk and stole second to get into scoring position, senior Sofia Baig laid down a sacrifice bunt to get McCuskey to third. McCuskey then scored off an error by the second baseman to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead. 

But the Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to pull ahead. 

The Sagehens added one more run in the sixth when Bianca Cockrell singled in Izzy Deatherage to put the final at 7-3.

Alondra Reynoso got the start for the Sagehens, and Emily Rockhill pitched two and two thirds inning of relief. Each pitcher struck out one.

Season Impact: The Sagehens fall to 6-16 overall and 3-9 in SCIAC play. Occidental improves to 7-13 overall and 5-7 in the conference. 

Next Game: The Sagehens have some midweek action when they host non-conference opponent Willamette in a doubleheader next Wednesday, March 29 beginning at 2:30 p.m.
