CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team fell in a double header to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 3-1 and 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Wig Beach Field.
Season Impact: With the losses, the Sagehens drop to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the SCIAC while La Verne improves to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led by senior Bianca Cockrell who went 1-2 with a solo home run for Pomona-Pitzer in the loss.
The Leopards were led by Katheryn Navarro who went 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore Liz Rodarte got the start in the circle for the Sagehens as she went eight innings gave up three runs on four hits and recorded six strikeouts.
A low scoring game one in this SCIAC double header as the Leopards jumped ahead first in the top of the fourth after Borden doubled home Condon to take a 1-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer came back and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as Cockrell blasted a solo shot to left field to even up the score at 1-1.
La Verne took a two-run lead in the top of the eighth after Navarro came up to the plate and hit a two-run home run to left field to give the Leopards a 3-1 lead in extra innings.
The Sagehens couldn't come up with a rally in the bottom of the eighth as they fell in game one of the double header to La Verne.
The Sagehens were led by freshman Marya Ornelas who went 1-2 with the only RBI of the game for the Sagehens.
The Leopards were led by Carly Condon who went 2-2 with a walk and Shelby Tevis who went 1-3 with a two-run homer for La Verne.
Cockrell got the start in game two as she went five innings gave up two runs on five hits and struck out four batters.
La Verne did all of their damage with one swing of the bat as Tevis homered to left field in the top of the fifth to give the Leopards a 2-0 lead.
The Sagehens cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first fifth as they responded with an RBI single by Ornelas.
Pomona-Pitzer got runners on base with the tying run on second and the winning run on first but the Sagehens couldn't get them home as they fell in both games of the double header.
