Men's Water Polo: Elliott Nets Game-Winning In 8-7 Win Over No. 20 San Jose State

LOS ANGELES, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team split day two of the SoCal Invitational with a narrow 13-11 loss to No. 10 UC Irvine and a 8-7 win over No. 20 San Jose State on Saturday afternoon.

Season Impact: with the split, the Sagehens move to 6-4 overall.

UC Irvine 13, Pomona-Pitzer 11

The Sagehens came up just short as they fell to No.  10 UC Irvine 13-11 on Saturday Morning at the Burns Aquatics Center.

The Sagehens were led by Dylan Elliott and Joseph Schafer who each netted a hat-trick in the loss. James Kelbert came away with the loss but had 12 saves in goal and one save.

The Anteaters and Sagehens got out to a hot start as they netted four goals each in the first period of play. Schafer got the scoring going early with a goal off of an assist by Adam Gross but UCI answered with a goal to tie the match at 1-1. Elliott followed up with a goal but the Anteaters took their first lead of the day after back-to-back goals gave them a 3-2 lead. The Sagehens ended the period with two of the final three goals from Noah Sasaki and Keegan Coleman to tie the match at 4-4 heading into the second.

UCI jumped ahead in the second as they outscored the Sagehens 4-1.  UCI started out with a goal that was answered by Schafer, but the Anteaters ended the half with three-straight goals to take an 8-5 lead at the break.

UCI started the second half with a goal before the Sagehens answered with two-straight goals from Schafer and Jacob Niskey to cut the lead down to 9-7. Elliott netted one more goal for the Sagehens in the third but UCI outscored the Sagehens 4-3 in the third to take a 12-8 lead heading into the fourth.

Pomona-Pitzer opened up the fourth with a five-meter penalty goal from Niskey while Elliott and Sam Sasaki added goals to cut the lead down to 13-11 but the Sagehens couldn't come back from the early deficit as they fell to UCI.

Pomona-Pitzer 8, San Jose State 7

The Sagehens were led by Elliott who netted four goals in the win. Kellan Grant earned the win for the Sagehens as he logged 24 minutes in goal and had 9 saves with two steals.

The Sagehens got out to a big lead in the first as they tallied four goals in the opening period.  Pomona-Pitzer started the first half with three-straight goals from Sam Sasaki, Ben Sasaki and Elliott before San Jose State netted their first goal of the match to cut the lead down to 3-1. The Sagehens and Spartans each netted one more goal in the first as Elliott scored his second goal of the period to give the Sagehens a 4-2 lead.

The Sagehens opened up the second period with a five-meter penalty goal from Schafer and ended the second with a goal from Coleman to take a 6-3 lead heading into halftime.

The Spartans began to make a comeback in the second half as they outscored the Sagehens 2-1 in the third to cut the lead down to 7-5 heading into the fourth period. San Jose State went on to score the first two goals of the fourth to tie the match at 7-7 but Elliott came up big for the Sagehens as he netted a goal in the closing seconds to give the Sagehens a big win over No. 20 San Jose State.
