LOS ANGELES, CA. – The No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team defeated No. 20 Loyola Marymount 9-8 on Sunday afternoon in the Mountain Pacific Invitational.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens end the Mountain Pacific Invitational with a win and improve to 3-8 overall.
The Sagehens were led by Adam Gross who tallied a career-high five goals in the win. Adam Ward, Max Ries, Dylan Elliot and Joseph Schafer each chipped in with one goal each. Goalkeeper Daniel Diemer earned the win in today's game as he tallied 14 saves for the Sagehens
Pomona-Pitzer came out and netted the first four goals of the game as Gross, Ries and Elliot found the back of the net to give the Sagehens a 4-0 lead with 5:11 left in the second period.
After shutting out LMU in the first period, the Lions scored their only goal of the first half with 31 seconds left until halftime as the Sagehens led 4-1 at the half.
LMU came out in the second half and scored two-straight goals to cut the lead down to 4-3 but the Sagehens responded with back to back goals from Gross off of assists from Noah Sasaki to hold a 6-3 lead heading into the fourth.
LMU and Pomona-Pitzer went back and forth to open up the fourth period as the Sagehens led 9-5 after Gross netted his fifth goal of the afternoon with 3:02 left in the game.
The Lions attempted a comeback as they scored three-straight goals to end the game but the Sagehens held off the Lions late to hold on to the win.
