FRESNO, Calif. – The No. 15 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team fell to No. 5 UC Santa Barbara 13-9 but came back to defeat Fresno Pacific 8-5 in the FPU Mini Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Sagehens had a solid showing against the Gauchos this time around as UC Santa Barbara got the best of Pomona-Pitzer earlier in the season by the score of 18-3.
The Gauchos had the upper hand early in the game as they held a 4-2 lead over the Sagehens after the first period of play.
The second quarter was a back and forth battle but UCSB came out on top 9-6 heading into the half as they outscored the Sagehens 5-4.
Pomona-Pitzer was held to only one goal in the third as the Gauchos held their largest lead of the game at 12-7 heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens battled back as they outscored UCSB 2-1 in the final quarter but the deficit was too much to overcome as they fell 13-9.
Pomona-Pitzer then turned its attention to Fresno Pacific after the loss.
Senior James Baker led the Sagehens with a hat trick as he tallied three goals against Fresno Pacific. Freshman Jacob Niskey pitched in with two goals and sophomore Adam Ward, senior Tommy Turner and freshman Zach Senator each had one goal apiece.
The Sunbirds and Sagehens both played a very even first half as both schools scored one in the first and two goals in the second to head into halftime in a 3-3 tie.
The Sagehens owned the second half as they scored five goals in the second half and held Fresno Pacific to only two.
Junior goal keeper Daniel Diemer tallied eight saves and two steals as the Sagehens went on to win their 18th game of the season.
