Men's Water Polo: Sagehens Fall To Top-Ranked UCLA 18-7

BERKLEY, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team fell in the first match of the NorCal Tournament to defending National Champions and No. 1 ranked UCLA by the score of 18-7.

The Sagehens move to 2-5 on the year during their early tournament run and the Bruins improve to 12-0.

Pomona-Pitzer was led by sophomore Adam Ward and senior Tommy Turner who each had two goals in the loss. UCLA was led by Joey Fuentes who tallied four goals for the Bruins in the win.

UCLA started out with the hot hands in the first period as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Sagehens battled back with goals from Ward, Turner and freshman Sam Gorcey-Biblowitz but trailed the Bruins 6-3 after the first period of play.

UCLA began to pull away in the second as they opened up the period with four-straight goals before junior Mark Hallman found the back of the net as the Sagehens went into halftime with a 10-4 deficit.

Turner netted the only goal in the third period for the Sagehens while Ward and senior James Baker both found the back of the net in the fourth but Pomona-Pitzer could not battle back against the top-ranked UCLA Bruins.

The Sagehens will continue their play in the NorCal Tournament as they face the loser of the UC Irvine vs Pepperdine match on Saturday, September 24th at 8:00 a.m.
