Men's Water Polo Starts Fast, Cruises Past La Verne

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team stormed out to a 5-0 lead in the opening minutes and cruised to a 19-8 win over La Verne on Saturday morning at Haldeman Pool.

The win was the third in a row for the Sagehens, who improve to 8-14 overall and 4-2 in the SCIAC, as senior Stephen Vint (pictured), playing in his final match at Haldeman Pool and sophomore James Baker combined for four goals apiece. La Verne slips to 2-4 in league play with the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer, which lost to La Verne 10-9 in a non-league matchup back in September at the Inland Empire Classic, wasted no time taking control of the match as Baker and Vint scored on the first two possessions.  Sophomore Nic Lanker capped off the 5-0 run to start the match, and senior Travis Larsen and sophomore Tommy Turner added goals to make the score 7-1 at the end of the first quarter.

La Verne scored the first two goals of the second quarter to close within 7-3, but Vint had back-to-back goals to stop the run.  Junior Phillip Clayman and Lanker added second quarter goals to make the score 11-4 at the break, and the Sagehens weren't threatened again.

Freshman Mark Hallman, Lanker, and Clayman all had two goals for the Sagehens in support of Baker and Vint. Senior Austin Strong added a goal in the third quarter.

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it travels to CMS on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
