Cox Has Five Goals To Help Sagehens Into SCIAC Championship

La Verne, Calif. - Junior Jason Cox (Arnold, Md.) had five goals and the Pomona-Pitzer Water Polo team never trailed as it held off third-seeded Redlands for an 11-9 win in the SCIAC Semifinals on Saturday at the La Verne Aquatic Center.

With the win, the second-seeded Sagehens improve to 12-18 on the season (8-1 against SCIAC teams) and will advance to take on top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the championship match tomorrow at 3:15 p.m. The two teams tied for the regular season SCIAC title at 6-1, with CMS capturing the head to head match-up 10-8 at its home pool.

Cox helped stake Pomona-Pitzer to a 4-1 lead with three first quarter goals, then after Redlands pulled back within one, he scored his fourth goal with 10 seconds left in the first half to put the Sagehens ahead 6-4 heading into the break.

Pomona-Pitzer built its lead up to 8-4 in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs stormed back to make the score 8-7 with 1:52 left in the third. Junior Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.) finally stopped that run with a goal early in the fourth quarter, but Redlands answered back with 3:56 left to make the score 9-8.

Senior Jaron Moler (Carmichael, Calif.) responded on the next Sagehen possession to stretch the lead to 10-8, and sophomore Ryan Higgins (Orinda, Calif.) scored next to give Pomona-Pitzer back its three-goal margin at 11-8 with 2:49 left. Clint Freeman scored his third of the game for Redlands with 2:25 to go, and the Bulldogs had two more possessions to try to close even closer, but the Sagehen defense held them off for the 11-9 win.

Senior goalie Kyle Pokorny (Coronado, Calif.) had eight saves for the Sagehens to get the win in goal. Moore finished with two goals, while four other players had one apiece for Pomona-Pitzer.
