Men's Track and Field: Ten Sagehens Earn All-Region Honors

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Ten athletes from the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Track and Field team earned All-West Region honors the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced. The Sagehens accounted for fifteen total spots on the USTFCCCA All-Region list as three athletes earned the distinction in more than one event.

The top-5 individuals in each event from each region as well the region's top-3 relay teams earned All-Region distinction.

Cal Neikirk and Paul Messana highlighted the list for Pomona-Pitzer after they each made the list three times. Neikirk, a sophomore from Roanoke, VA, made his way on to the list for his performances in the 110 meter hurdles, the 400 meter hurdles, and the 4x400 meter relay. Neikirk capped off his year with a second place finish in the 110 meter hurdles at the SCIAC Championships. He posted the fastest time in the West Region in the 110 hurdles (14.70) at the No. 3 SCIAC Multi-Dual earlier in the season.

Messana earned his way onto the list for his times in the 800 meter, 1500 meter, and the 4x400 meter relay. The senior earned his highest ranking in the 800 meter where he posted the second fastest time in the region at 1:51.13. Messana finished the SCIAC Championships with a second place finish in the 800 meter. 

Junior Nick Vucovich also joined the list multiple times, scoring top times in the 800 meter and as a member of the 4x400 meter relay team. 

The Sagehens' three SCIAC Champions also earned All-West Region honors. Calvin Aylward won his second consecutive SCIAC Championship in the javelin, Andy Reischling won the 5000 meter, and Danny Rosen led a Sagehen sweep in the 3000 meter steeplechase. 

Ryan Abele joined Messana, Vucovich, and Neikirk as a All-West selection as a member of the 4x400 meter relay team. The team ran the second fastest time in the region this season (3:17.21).

Rounding out the All-West Region list for the Sagehens are Ethan Hardacre (long jump), Julian DeGroot-Lutzner (3000 meter steeplechase), and Parker Head (3000 meter steeplechase).

Messana, Aylward, Reischling, and Rosen will finish the 2017 season at NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships on May 25-27 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
