Tennis: Sagehens Host Round One Of SCIAC Championships

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Tennis teams are set to compete in the 2017 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships this weekend.

Both teams will host the first round of the tournament this Friday at the Pauley Tennis Complex with the men's team hosting Chapman at 1:00 p.m. and the women's team will host Whittier at 3:00 p.m.

As a result of the last home sporting event this season, the Pomona-Pitzer Athletic Department will be having its final student giveaway of the year. Students in attendance with their Pomona or Pitzer Student ID's for the Pomona-Pitzer tennis matches will receive a free Pomona-Pitzer tank top while supplies last.

The women's team ended the regular season with a 13-6 overall record and went 6-1 in conference play to earn the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Championships.

The Sagehens finished in second place in the ITA Indoor National Championships this season and had wins over ranked opponents Carnegie Mellon, Amherst, MIT, Tufts and Redlands.

Caroline Casper comes into the tournament with the No. 1 ranking as a singles player in the West Region and Maryann Zhao holds the No. 4 overall West ranking. Zhao and teammate Emily Chen also hold the No. 2 West ranking for a doubles team.

The University of Redlands will hold rounds two and three of the tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

SCIAC Women's Tennis Tournament Central

The men's team heads into the SCIAC Championships with a 17-9 overall record with a 5-2 record in conference play to earn the No. 3 seed.

The Sagehens are currently the No. 12 ranked team in Division III this season while singles player Jake Yasgoor is currently the No. 1 ranked player in the West Region. In doubles play, the Sagehen team of Spencer Simonides and Antony Bello are the 5th ranked team in the West Region.

The Pauley Tennis Complex on the campus of Pomona College will hold rounds two and three on Saturday and Sunday.
