CLAREMONT, CA — The Sagehens won five singles matches and the No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team won a non-conference match against the No. 25 Bates Bobcats 6-3 Tuesday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: This is Pomona-Pitzer's second win over a top-25 opponent. The Sagehens opened the spring season with a win over No. 20 Gustavus Aldolphus earlier this season.
The Sagehens improve to 5-1 overall this season. Bates drops to 0-1.
Bates took the early lead in the contest, taking two of the doubles matches from the Sagehens. Graham Maassen and Marko Mandic fell to Ben Rosen and Chris Ellis 8-2, and Antony Bello and Avery Bicks fell 8-5 to Pat Ordway and Adam Schwartz.
The Sagehens scored wins in the No. 1, 2, and 3 singles matches. Jake Yasgoor won in the No. 1 slot, taking his match 6-4, 6-0. Maassen responded in his singles match, winning in the No. 2 spot 6-7, 7-5, 6-0 against Chris Ellis.
In the No. 3 match Bello bested Ordway, winning 6-2, 6-4. Mandic won the No. 5 match, beating Schwartz in two sets 6-2, 6-1. Josh Gearou won his match in three sets, beating Brent Feldman 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
Josh Kim fell in the No. 4 match 6-4, 7-5.
Next Game: The Sagehens travel to Cleveland, Ohio this weekend to play in the ITA Indoor National Championship. Pomona-Pitzer opens against Chicago University on Friday, February 24 at 9:00 a.m. and then will wait and see who they face on Saturday and Sunday.
