Men's Soccer: Arnold's Goal Pushes Sagehens Past Kingsmen

CLAREMONT, CA. – Sophomore Jack Arnold netted the difference to lift the Sagehens past Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran 1-0 on Saturday morning at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-9 overall and 6-6 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens currently sit in fifth place in the SCIAC standings.

Pomona-Pitzer was led by Arnold who scored the only goal of the game in the win. Senior Bjorn Sigurdsson tallied an assist off of Arnold's goal. Sophomore Bryan Diangson tallied another impressive performance in goal as he notched his third shutout of the season with three saves.

The Sagehens came out needing a win in a crucial SCIAC matchup and their play reflected that early on. Pomona-Pitzer immediately went after the Kingsmen's defense with 11 shots in the first half and six of them on frame. Unfortunately, the Sagehens did everything but finish in the first half with multiple scoring opportunities but no goals to their name as they went into halftime tied 0-0.

The Sagehen defense gave Cal Lutheran fits all match long. The Kingsmen only took six shots in the game and had two real scoring opportunities. One of which was saved by Diangson in the 65th minute and another just minutes later was deflected towards goal but headed away by sophomore Clay Hamilton.

Arnold was very familiar with the Cal Lutheran backline as he broke free on several occasions in the first half but could not find the back of the net. Arnold decided to take a much different approach in the second half that resulted in the deciding goal. After a steal by the Sagehens' midfield, Sigurdsson left a ball for Arnold who hit an absolute stunner of a goal with his right foot from outside the box leaving the goalkeeper to only watch as the Sagehens took a 1-0 lead in the 86th minute of the match.

Cal Lutheran tried to get its offense back on its feet but the Sagehens held the Kingsmen off and picked up a big three points in the SCIAC standings.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to SCIAC opponent Whittier College on Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m.
