CLAREMONT, CA. – Senior Bjorn Sigurdsson headed in the golden goal in double overtime as the Sagehens came away with a 2-1 win in their home opener against non-conference opponent UC Santa Cruz.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens begin 2018 with a win and move to 1-0 on the year.
The Sagehens were led by Sigurdsson and sophomore Daniel Tamkin who each scored a goal at polar opposite times during the match.
Pomona-Pitzer started out the game with a goal as they took advantage of a misplay by the Santa Cruz goalkeeper that Tamkin cashed in on as he was able to steal the ball from the goalkeeper's feet and put it in the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead in the second minute of play.
Santa Cruz tied the game in the 66th minute after Ari Statler headed in a cross from Keith McCarty to even the score at 1-1.
Goals were not easy to come by for the Banana Slugs as sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Diangson came up big for his first start of 2018. Diangson ended the game with six saves including a crucial one on one save in overtime that kept the game alive for the Sagehens.
The two teams played an aggressive style game and were dead even after 105 minutes of play, but a cross in from Eamon Stein found the head of Sigurdsson who placed it into the bottom corner of the goal and gave the Sagehens a walk-off win in their first contest of 2018.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next host non-conference opponent Carthage on September 1st at 11:00 a.m.
