Men's Soccer Clinches SCIAC Bid With Senior Day Win

Claremont, Calif. - Six different players scored goals, including three seniors on their Senior Day, as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team earned a 6-0 win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon to clinch a SCIAC Tournament bid.

With the win, the Sagehens are now 11-4-3 overall and 9-3-2 in the SCIAC, guaranteeing a top four finish and a SCIAC Tournament bid as well as giving it a slim hold on first place in the SCIAC over Chapman (9-4-2) and Occidental (8-4-1 with a game tonight at CMS) with one week left. Pomona-Pitzer can control its own destiny and clinch the league title with wins over Redlands at home on Wednesday and at Whittier on Saturday (or with less than six points if other results fall their way). Caltech falls to 0-16-1 and 0-13-1 in league play.

Senior Nathan Shekita (pictured) had a goal and two assists to lead an offense which was much more successful against Caltech in the rematch, after narrowly defeating the Beavers 1-0 in Pasadena the first time. Seniors Drew Lind and Avery Raimondo added goals, senior Arash Mahboubi had two assists, and senior goalie Nigel Brady and senior center back Geordie Marriner contributed to the shutout.

It wasn't all the seniors, as sophomores Felipe Galvis and Matthew Marvin scored the team's two first half goals and added assists in the second half, while freshman Peter Rentzepis had a goal. Galvis got Pomona-Pitzer started just 4:55 into the game when he was played in along the right side by Mahboubi and hit a hard, low shot that tucked inside the far post. In the 20th minute, Shekita won a 50-50 ball along the left sideline and played Marvin in behind the defense, who calmly tucked his shot across the net, off the right post and in to make the score 2-0.

The second half saw the Sagehens extend their lead to 3-0 less than seven minutes in, as Galvis played a ball back to Marvin, who slipped it through to Shekita for an easy goal in front in the 52nd minute. The fourth goal came as Mahboubi played a ball down the right side to junior back Paul Picciano, who one-timed a cross through to the weak side that Lind settled and buried from eight yards out.

Rentzepis headed in a corner kick into the upper-left corner to make it 5-0 and Raimondo capped off the scoring when he got to a loose ball 12 yards out that he shot on frame, before it was deflected in by a sprawling Caltech defender over the dive of goalie John David Feist.

Pomona-Pitzer will host Redlands at 4 p.m. in a match with heavy SCIAC Tournament implications.
