EAGLE ROCK, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball Team was finally dealt their first loss in 2019, seeing their 18-game winning streak snapped by Occidental College on the road on Saturday evening in an extremely close 64-63 loss. The two sides traded baskets in the final minutes of the game, but it was the Tigers that managed to hold on in this one-possession contest. Corbin Koch posted a season-high 18 points with eight rebounds while Daniel Rosenbaum led the team with 23 points.
Season Impact: The Sagehens winning streak record for men's basketball stands at 18 games, with the run starting back in December 1, 2018. The Sagehens are now 22-2 overall and 14-1 in the SCIAC.
Jumping to an early 10-2 lead, the Sagehens couldn't pull the game out of reach as the Tigers responded with a 13-0 run to take a 18-12 lead. The Sagehens worked back to close the gap, going on a 7-2 run capped by a Rosenbaum three-pointer to cut the lead 20-19. However, the Tigers went on another brief scoring run and led 33-23 at the half.
Adam Rees opened up the second half with a steal and drove for an and-one layup. Later, Rosenbaum found Alex Preston in the lane and the sophomore rose up for a dunk to the cut the deficit 36-30. The Tigers tried to stretch the lead, scoring seven straight points to build a 43-30 advantage, but back-to-back threes from Micah Elan and Koch brought the game back to single digits. With 6:53 left in the game, the Sagehens finally came back within striking distance as Elan made a three and Koch followed with a close -range jumper to cut the lead 54-52. The game winded down to a one-possession battle, but the Tigers prevailed in the end.
