CLAREMONT, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team defeated non-conference opponent Hardin-Simmons 90-78 on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 9-1 overall.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Alex Preston who was a problem for the Cowboys in the paint as he ended the game with a team-high 24 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Junior Micah Elan led the guards with 17 points while junior Adam Rees and sophomore Pavle Rohalj chipped in with 12 each.
The Cowboys started the game on top early as they jumped out to a quick 8-6 lead, but the Sagehens sparked an early 11-0 run to give them a 17-8 lead with 14 minutes left in the first half. Rohalj came off of the bench early and did damage for the Sagehens down low. He notched 10 of his 12 points in the first half and established a presence in the paint with Preston.
The Cowboys began to creep back into the game late in the first half and brought the deficit within one point at 35-34 with 3:03 left before halftime, but the Sagehens held off the Cowboys late and extended their cushion to six points at 46-40 heading into the locker room.
Pomona-Pitzer came out and immediately started scoring the basketball as they extended their lead to double digits after a senior Corbin Koch three made it 52-40. The Sagehens maintained their lead throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half but Hardin-Simmons would not go away. The Cowboys hit a run midway through the second half and brought the game to a tie at 75-75 with just under five minutes to play. The Sagehens shut down the Cowboys on defense for the remainder of the game and the offense went on an 11-0 run to extend the lead to 86-75 and secured their fifth-straight win.
