CLAREMONT, CA. – Friday night's showdown between the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball Team and the Puget Sound Loggers at Rains Center ended in victory for the visitors as the Loggers triumphed day one of the Wells Classic 89-84. It was a fast-paced game featuring full court presses, gritty one-on-one defending, and plenty of running as both teams combined for 132 field goal attempts. Ultimately, the Loggers prevailed due to their three-point shooting, making 13-of-35 attempts and perimeter defending.
Season Impact: The loss puts the Sagehens at a 0-4 record while the Loggers Improve to 5-0.
Daniel Rosenbaum led the Sagehens with 22 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the field, while Adam Rees had 11 rebounds and five points. Jimmy Wohrer led the Loggers with 25 points and collected seven rebounds while Nate Vieira brought 13 points off the bench.
The opening half got off to a rushed start, as both teams moved rather quickly to get a shot off, but neither side were able to catch rhythm as the two teams remained tied 3-3 in the opening four minutes. Later with 13:38 remaining in the half, Corbin Koch scored a layup off a turnover by the Loggers and Micah Elan followed with another layup and then a three-pointer to give the Sagehens an 11-7 lead. The Hens continued to hold onto the lead, but two three-pointers by Jimmy Wohrer with 7:51 left gave the Loggers an 18-17 lead. The Loggers broke into a full court press to bother the Hens' offense for the remainder of the half, as both teams ran down the floor trading baskets. The half ended in the Hens' favor 35-34.
The second half started off similarly as how the first half ended, as both teams ran the floor trading quick baskets back-and-forth. The Hens worked hard the keep up with the Loggers' offense and pace, maintaining their lead for majority of the half. However, with 9:14 left in the game, the Loggers sparked a 7-0 run to take a 66-63 lead. Rex Bodia tried to take back the lead with back-to-back layups to make it 68-66 for Pomona-Pitzer, but another 7-0 run by the Loggers gave Puget Sound a 73-68 lead. The Hens managed to tie the game again at 77 apiece with 4:13 remaining thanks to a Winston Nelson layup. The Loggers seemingly took the game with a three-pointer followed by a layup to take an 85-80 lead with 1:13 remaining. They forced a turnover within the final 15 seconds to seal the victory.
