Baseball: Sagehens Come Up Short Against Occidental At Home, 9-8

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental 9-8 on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 16-18 overall and 8-11 in conference play this season.

The Sagehens were led by junior Adam Hinthorne who had a career day with a 4-5 performance with three RBI's and three runs scored and hit his first home run of his career. Freshman Jeremiah Quezada and senior Kevin Jordan also had three-hit games as they each went 3-6 in the loss.

The Tigers were led by Reid Gibbs who a perfect 3-3 with one run and one RBI.

Occidental jumped out to a quick lead as Devon DeRaad drove in a run in the top of the first with an RBI double to left center to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens came back to tie the game in the bottom of the third as senior Tanner Nishioka drove in Hinthorne on a sacrifice fly to even the score at 1-1.

Pomona-Pitzer came up and put a five spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth as Hinthorne blasted his first career home run to give the Sagehens a 4-1 lead. Senior Kevin Jordan followed that up with a solo home run to center field as the Sagehens hit back to back home runs for the first time this season to push the lead to 5-1. The Sagehens capped off the inning as Quezada singled up the middle to bring in junior Bryce Rogan to extend the lead to 6-1 heading into the seventh.

After surrendering a big inning to the Sagehens, the Tigers came back with a big inning of their own as they put up eight runs in the top of the seventh off of four hits, five walks and two errors by the Sagehens' defense in the inning to reclaim the lead at 9-6.

The Sagehens came back and cut the lead down to just one run after Jordan and Nishioka came up with RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the deficit down to just 9-8 but the Sagehens couldn't come up with another run late in the game as they fell to the Tigers at home.
