CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell to non-conference opponent Whitworth 8-3 in game one on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to an even 4-4 on the year and have not played a conference game yet. Whitworth now improves to 3-1 to start its 2017 season.
The Pirates were led by Joel Condreay who went 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Also with two hits for the Pirates were Jordan McGowan and JT Phelan.
The Sagehens got on the board first in the bottom of the first after a Rogan double led to Hulse smacking a RBI double to left center to bring home Rogan to take a 1-0 lead. Pomona-Pitzer struck again in the bottom of the third as Hulse doubled home Rogan again to take a 2-0 lead.
The Pirates offense got going in the top of the fourth after Bird singled to right field for an RBI and Phelan doubled home two more as the Pirates took over the lead at 3-2.
Whitworth extended its lead in the top of the fifth after an RBI double and a groundout plated two more Pirates to take a 5-2 lead over the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer cut the lead down to 5-3 after senior Tanner Nishioka squared up a fastball and lined it over the center field wall for his fifth homerun of the year but Whitworth came back and plated three more runs in the top of the ninth as the Pirates took game one over the Sagehens.
