CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team swept their season home finale with a win over SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11-1 in seven innings and defeated Occidental 8-7 in 10 innings in game two of their double header.
Junior David Gerics moved to a perfect 6-0 on the year as he went all seven innings, only surrendered three hits and struck out five batters.
The Sagehens got out to a hot start as they connected on three-straight singles to open up the bottom half of the first as sophomore Bryce Rogan brought home senior Kevin Brice to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.
Junior Tanner Nishioka plated three runners with one swing of the bat as he notched his fifth home run of the year to right center to extend the Sagehen lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
Pomona-Pitzer kept the bats hot as they scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth as Brice doubles home two runners, senior Simon Rosenbaum singled home one and Nishioka hit his second home run of the day to opposite field to give the Sagehens a 9-0 lead over the Stags.
CMS got on the board in the top of the seventh after Mackenzie Menthen hit a solo shot down the left field line to cut the lead down to 9-1.
Pomona-Pitzer responded with two in the bottom of the seventh as Brice hit a walk off double to left center as the Sagehens defeated rival CMS 11-1 in seven innings.
The Sagehens would then take on Occidental in game two of the SCIAC Round Robin double header.
Occidental started out on top as they scored on an RBI double down the line by Jamie Cooper to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
The Tigers reclaimed the lead in the top of the third with an RBI single through the left side to take a 2-1 lead.
The Sagehens responded once again in the bottom half of the inning as Rogan smacked his sixth home run of the year to tie the game at 2-2.
Occidental came back in the top of the fifth and Devon DeRaad answered with a home run of his own to put the Tigers back on top 4-2.
Pomona-Pitzer came back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh as Rosenbaum ripped a two-run homer to left field to tie the game at 4-4.
After the comeback by the Sagehens, the Tigers strung together a few hits in the top of the eighth and Graham Primm singled down the right field line to take a 5-4 lead.
With their backs against the wall, the Sagehens came back in the bottom of the ninth and tied the game at 5-5 as junior Kevin Jordan singled home Rosenbaum to send the game to extra innings.
The Tigers took the lead again in the top of the 10th as they scored one run on a sacrifice fly and added one more run on a wild pitch to take a 7-5 lead over the Sagehens heading into the bottom of the 10th.
Pomona-Pitzer refused to quit in their final home game of the year as they mounted a comeback with Brice hitting an RBI double off of the left field wall to score sophomore Duncan Skerrett to cut the lead to 7-6. The Tigers walked in the tying run and Hulse beat out a potential double play ball to give the Sagehens a walk off win in their final home game of the season.
The Sagehens will continue the SCIAC Round Robin as they travel to Cal Lutheran on Sunday, May 1st at 11:00 a.m.
