Baseball: Sagehens Fall Late To La Verne 6-3 To Open Series

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent La Verne 6-3 on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Junior Casey Hershfield picked up the lose for the Sagehens and moves to 1-2 on the year. 

Nick Byrd came in relief and got the win for the Leopards and moves to a perfect 5-0 for the season.

The Leopards struck first as they tallied three runs in the top of the second off of an RBI double to center field and a sacrifice fly that gave La Verne a 3-0 lead.

The Sagehens responded with back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore Matt Omori and senior Kevin Brice to bring the La Verne lead down to 3-2.

Pomona-Pitzer came back to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth as sophomore Bryce Rogan brought home junior Kevin Jordan on a sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3 heading into the ninth.

The Sagehen defense had three errors in the top of the ninth that allowed two runs to come in for the Leopards. La Verne also added an RBI single by Anthony Gonzalez as the Leopards held off the Sagehens for their 15th win of the season.

The Sagehens next travel to La Verne on Saturday, March 19th to finish the season series with a double header beginning at 11:00 a.m.
