WHITTIER, Calif. -- The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Whittier 8-7 on the road on Friday afternoon at Memorial Field.
The Sagehens were led by senior Kevin Brice who went 3-5 on the day with two RBI's, two runs scored and a home run.
Whittier started out on top as they struck first in the bottom of the third as Jake Raynaud singled home two Poets to give Whittier an early 2-0 lead.
The Sagehens responded with a big fifth inning as Brice started out the scoring with an RBI double to left center to bring home sophomore Adam Hinthorne. Sophomore Bryce Rogan walked to bring home Brice and junior Kevin Jordan drove home senior Simon Rosenbaum with a fielder's choice to give Pomona-Pitzer a 3-2 lead.
The Poets responded and took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer by Max Bradshaw to give Whittier a 5-4 lead.
The lead changed hands again in the top of the seventh as Rogan blasted a two-run home run to put the Sagehens on top 6-5.
Whittier responded again in the bottom half of the inning as they tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take an 8-6 lead heading into the eighth.
Pomona-Pitzer added one more in the eighth as Brice connected on a solo home run to cut the lead down to just one run at 8-7.
The Sagehens got their leadoff batter on base in the ninth but Whittier was able to hold off Pomona-Pitzer to take the first game of the three game series.
The Sagehens next take the field as they host Whittier on Saturday, March 5th for a double header beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Alumni Field.
