Big Sixth Inning Leads La Verne Past Pomona-Pitzer

La Verne, Calif. - The La Verne Baseball team scored 10 times in the sixth inning to turn a low-scoring pitcher's duel into a 12-3 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Friday afternoon in the first of a three-game SCIAC series.

The loss snaps a seven-game win streak for the Sagehens, who fall to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in the SCIAC. La Verne moves to 12-5 overall and 11-2 in league play.

Senior shortstop Sam Fox (pictured) started things off in great fashion for the Sagehens, hitting a home run on only the third pitch of the game to give the Sagehens an early 1-0 lead. After La Verne tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Pomona-Pitzer went ahead 3-1 in the fifth when a two-out error allowed two runs to score. Kenny Rabin led off with a hit, and Fox added a single for his second hit of the game.

However, La Verne broke the game wide open in the sixth.  Ben White's three-run double gave the Leopards a 5-3 lead and Jared Hovespian, who was a pinch hitter earlier in the sixth and singled, added a two-run double for his second hit of the inning.

Javi Iniguez then took it from there, earning the win with eight strong innings, striking out 10 and allowing five hits. Fox ended up 3-for-4 for half of Pomona-Pitzer's six hits on the day.

The two teams will play two games tomorrow at Alumni Field, beginning at 11 a.m.
