Puget Sound Rallies Late To Spoil Season Opener

Claremont, Calif. - Puget Sound scored three times in the eighth and four times in the ninth as it rallied from a 3-2 deficit to take a 9-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Friday in the season opener for both teams at Alumni Field.

Junior left fielder Kevin Brice (pictured) homered in his first at-bat of the 2015 season, a two-run blast in the second to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead. Senior shortstop Sam Fox added a two-out RBI single to stretch the lead to 3-1 and Puget Sound scored once in the top of the third to pull within 3-2.

The score stayed the same until the eighth, when Layn Croney singled to center field with runners on first and second and one out. The ball got through to the wall for an error, and all three runners came around to score to put the Loggers ahead 5-3.

The Sagehens got one of the runs back in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single from Mark Okuma to close within 5-4, but left two runners on base as Kian Kurokowa struck out the last two batters of the inning.

The Loggers then had a big top of the ninth inning as Cal Muramaru (4-for-4) led off with a single, and Connor Savage and Nickolas Alarcio had back to back bunt singles attemping sacrifices to load the bases with nobody out. Chris Zerio then hit a line drive double to left to score two runs, and Puget Sound would tack on two more to stretch the lead to 9-4.

Junior first baseman Simon Rosenbaum led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk, and senior designated hitter Jake Bruml followed with a single, but Kurokowa retired the next three batters in order to seal the win.

Senior second baseman Kenny Rabin was the one player with a multi-hit game for the Sagehens, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Savage was 3-for-5 for Puget Sound, and Zerio finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Whitworth at 11 a.m. and then concludes its opening weekend with a rematch against Puget Sound at 12 p.m.
