Sagehens Complete Three-Game Sweep Of Caltech

Pasadena, Calif. – Coleman Lukas had five RBI in the first game and E.J. Lopez (pictured) added four RBI in the nightcap, as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team swept a doubleheader over Caltech 19-0 and 12-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Nick Gentili was 6-for-7 in the doubleheader as well for the Sagehens (3-for-4 in the opener, 3-for-3 in the nightcap). With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 6-1-1 overall and 5-1 in the SCIAC. Caltech slips to 0-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

After going scoreless in the first inning of the opener, the Sagehens erupted for four in the second, four in the third and nine in the fourth. Lukas keyed the third inning with a two-run double, then added a three-run homer in the fourth. Jackson Badger chipped in with a two-run single in the fourth as well, while Gentili had a three-run triple.

Freshman pitcher Jake Bruml allowed only one hit and struck out nine in five innings of work to get the win and improve to 2-0 on the year.  Sam Fox was 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored, while Badger was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

In the nightcap, the Sagehens scored three times in the top of the first as Lopez started things off with an RBI single, and Bruml added an RBI single with the bases loaded. Gentili added an RBI double in the second, and then added another RBI double in the fourth to stretch the lead to 8-0. Lopez and Erik Munzer had RBI hits in the fifth to stretch the lead to 10-0.

Gentili was 3-for-3 in the nightcap to improve to 6-for-7 in the doubleheader and 18-for-28 on the season. Mike Moyer was 4-for-5 in the nightcap, while Lopez was 3-for-5 for his four RBI. Guy Stevens allowed five hits and one run to get the win, his first of the season.

The Sagehens will be back in action next weekend for a three-game series with Cal Lutheran, including a single game at home on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday at Cal Lutheran.
