SCIAC Track & Field Character Awards
Men's Award - Dixon Farmer Award:
Dixon Farmer, a 1963 Occidental grad, was the 1961 NCAA 440y hurdles champion, and a U.S. National Team member. Farmer coached collegiately at Occidental, Gustavus Adolphus College, San Diego State, the Univ. of Michigan and as an assistant at the Univ. of Washington. In addition, he was the T&F coordinator for the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, and was Team Manager of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team. Following that, Farmer served as Athletic Director at Occidental while also regularly being a public address announcer at numerous SCIAC Track and Field meets.
Women's Award - Jennifer Stary Award:
Jennifer Stary, a 1980 Pomona-Pitzer grad, was simply the best SCIAC athlete during its inaugural years for women, and decades later her overall accomplishments remain unsurpassed. In Track and Field, she was the top performer in the SCIAC all four years, singlehandedly dominating – and winning – more events than any other person in Conference history. At the end of her four years, Stary tallied a conference record of 19 individual SCIAC titles, including a conference record of six titles as a senior.Stary qualified for the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) Nationals all four years in the pentathlon. In her senior year, Stary qualified to the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials in the Pentathlon, where she placed 11th, scoring 3862 points. In 1981 following graduation, Stary placed sixth at the TAC National Meet in the heptathlon, and then she also placed third at the U.S. Sports Festival.
