PALM DESERT, CA — No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer women's golf improved to sixth place after round three of the NCAA Championships.
The Sagehens proved their stellar round two was not a fluke, with another solid day on Thursday. With the round, they moved ahead of several top teams, including their sixth street rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Despite their relative inexperience, first-years
Annabelle Chan and
Riley Wang led the way on moving day. Wang bounced back from her struggles to an impressive under par round. After struggling to hit greens the first two days, she found her rhythm with the long game. She was rewarded for hitting greens in regulation with a wave of three straight birdies in the early going, including a forty foot bomb and a near hole-in-one. Chan continued her impressive play with a more tumultuous round on day three. She notched two sixes and another double bogey, but evened it out with five birdies for a round of 72. She leads all SCIAC competitors in 20th place, individually.
Captain
Ottavia Lombardo recovered well from a double bogey on the first with three birdies en route to a +2 74. Lombardo's putting was her strength as she conquered the speedy, slopey Firecliff greens. Junior
Rachel LeMay wasn't as successful with the putter, but an abundance of greens gave her a solid round of 79. Junior
Eunice Yi rounded out the lineup with an 84.
The Hens tee it up in the final round starting at 8 AM. They sit 24 back of the leader, Emory, and 1 stroke outside of the top 5.
