Women’s Swim & Dive Wins 25th SCIAC Championship

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's swimming and diving clinched the SCIAC Championship Saturday after a series of strong performances on day four. The Sagehens finished the meet with 1051.5 points, ahead of CMS (886) and Chapman (442.5). 
 
The conference title is the Sagehens' sixth in the last nine years and their 25th championship in program history. JP Gowdy and his staff were named SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year following the meet, while Valerie Mello was named SCIAC Athlete of the Year. Izzy Yoon was also named SCIAC Newcomer of the Year. 
 
Yoon posted Pomona-Pitzer's first win of the day in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming a meet record time of 2:00.61. The Sagehens swept the podium in the event, with Charlotte Dixon taking second (2:01.28) and Amaia Sherman placing third (2:03.02). Mollie Appl came in fourth with a time of 2:04.72. 
 
Valerie Mello won the 100-yard freestyle after clocking in at 49.95. Pomona-Pitzer also swept the event, with Nina Aballea taking second (50.50) and Francesca Coppo placing third (50.89). The Sagehens secured yet another podium sweep in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Emmie Appl winning after swimming a time of 2:18.13. May Ling Roberts took second (2:20.46) and Elise Jones placed third (2:20.58). 
 
The Sagehens wrapped up the night with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Coppo, Aballea, Dixon and Mello swam to a meet record time of 3:21.54.
