CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's track and field team earned a fourth place finish at the 2024 SCIAC Track and Field Championships, finishing the two day competition with 106 points. The Sagehens earned 30 points in distance events, 23 in the jumps, 16 in relays, 15 in sprints, 12 in hurdles, eight in throws, and two in the SCIAC's inaugural heptathlon.
Championship Results
The Sagehens got Sunday started with
Izzy Sabatino in the heptathlon. Sabatino started the day with 428 points in long jump, jumping 4.50m before earning 483 points in the javelin with a 30.32m throw. Sabatino closed out the inaugural SCIAC heptathlon with a 2:47.37 in the 800m, good for 491 points. Overall, Sabatino scored 3,147 points through the two day competition, finishing in seventh to earn two points for the Sagehens.
In the afternoon portion of the Championships, the Sagehens got things started with a bronze medal performance from
Olivia Richards,
Olivia Reichle, Kensington Binstadt, and
Katriona Kirkpatrick in the 4 x100m as the four combined for a time of 48.11 seconds which stands as a new program record.
Mira Terdiman took eighth in the 1500m with a time of 4:45.07.
Olivia Reichle later took seventh in the 400m, crossing the line in 59.04 seconds.
Katriona Kirkpatrick took fourth in the 100m with a time of 12.37 seconds.
The Sagehens first gold medal performance of the day came by way of
Michaela Jones in the 800m. Jones led from start to finish after getting out strong and splitting a 64 for the first 400m of her race. Jones never relinquished her lead, fighting down the back stretch to set up a strong final 200m. Jones powered down the home stretch in front of the home crowd, crossing the finish line in a new SCIAC meet record and personal best time of 2:11.74 which stands as the 15th fastest time in Division III this season. In the 400m hurdles, the trio of
Nicole Player,
Kaitlyn Ulalisa, and
Kendrick Dahlin took fourth through sixth with Player finishing in 1:05.94 while Ulalisa and Dahlin ran 1:06.27 and 1:08.89. After a very short break,
Katriona Kirkpatrick came back to the track to run the 200m, stormed through the half lap in 25.18 seconds to take second place overall.
In the 5,000m,
Fiona Bodkin shined for the Sagehens, finishing the 3.10 mile race in 17:50.37 to earn a bronze medal in the event with
Chloe Connolly running an 18:22.72 to take ninth overall. In the high jump,
Natalia Cossio took fifth with a 1.52m clearance.
Ella Bowers and
Felicia Akinde showed well for the Sagehens in triple jump with Bowers jumping 11.69m to take second place while Akinde took fourth with an 11.05m jump. In the pole vault,
Morgan McDonald took ninth with a 2.60m jump.
The Sagehens closed out the 2024 SCIAC Track and Field Championships with a bang, winning the 4 x 400m relay for the third-straight year.
Katriona Kirkpatrick led off for the Sagehens and created a healthy lead before giving the Baton to
Michaela Jones who helped increase the gap. Jones passed the baton to
Nicole Player with Player running a smooth 400m to preserve the Sagehen lead with
Olivia Reichle anchoring the team. Chapman's Allison Kremer tried to pressure Reichle in the first 200m of the final leg, closing the gap to just a few meters but Reichle responded to the pressure with a surge into the final 200m. Reichle continued to power off the turn, holding off the Chapman anchor to help seal the Sagehens gold medal finish with a time of 3:52.47 which is currently the 18th best time in the nation.
