VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's track and field team sent three runners to the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend with
Bennett Booth-Genthe,
Colin Kirkpatrick, and
Derek Fearon competing in the mile, 3,000m, and 5,000m, respectively.
Bennett Booth-Genthe was the standout performer after winning the 2024 Indoor Mile National Championship Title on Ssaturday afternoon. Booth-Genthe becomes the 20th individual in program history to win a National Championship for the Sagehens men's track and field program and the 55th National Championship in Pomona-Pitzer history.
Fearon was the first competitor for the Sagehens, opening competition on Friday night in the 5k. Fearon came away with a 19th place finish after running a 14:40.62.
On Saturday afternoon,
Bennett Booth-Genthe etched his name into the history books as he took home the gold in the mile with a time of 4:04.23, over a second ahead of second place. Booth-Genthe's race plan went exactly as advertised as the senior stuck himself in second place from the opening lap and surged into first place just past the 1200m mark. Booth-Genthe used back-to-back sub-29.25 second laps for his final 400m to claim his National Championship Title, blowing kisses to the crowd as he made his way down the home stretch to cross the line in 4:04.23.
The Sagehens rounded out the National Championship weekend with an All-American performance out of
Colin Kirkpatrick in the 3,000m. Kirkpatrick started the race off strong, leading the pack for the opening 600m (1:37.23) before settling into sixth place from 1k through 1400m. Kirkpatrick slipped down into ninth place momentarily at the 2k mark and later at the 2600m mark but wouldn't be denied another All-American trophy for his mantle. With 400m to go, Kirkpatrick split 31.35 seconds and dropped a 28.76 second final lap to take seventh place with a time of 8:11.15 to earn All-American honors. Kirkpatrick's kick nearly earned him a fifth place spot as fifth and sixth ran 8:11.14 with Kirkpatrick just narrowly behind.
With one National Champion and another All-American finish, the Sagehens finished in 14th place as a team with 12 points overall.
