Sagehens Win 400 Free Relay to Highlight 7th Place Finish at NCAA Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's swim and dive team ended the 2024 NCAA Division III Swim and Dive Championship in thrilling fashion, winning the 400 Freestyle Relay National Championship to put an exclamation point on a seventh place team finish, ending the four day competition with 257.5 points. The Sagehens 400 Free Relay National Championship is their second National Title at this year's Championship, earning the 200 Free Relay Title on Thursday night with the program's last title coming in the 800 freestyle relay in the 1983-84 season. 
 
Finals Results
After the evening finals, Bennett Jones moved into 24th place overall in the 1650 with a time of 17:24.39 with Abby Raclaw finishing in 27th overall with a time of 17:28.06. 
 
The Sagehens were everywhere in the 100 free with Sabrina Wang and Francesca Coppo taking 14th and 16th overall with Wang touching the well in 51.47 seconds while Coppo touched in 51.87 seconds. Valerie Mello earned a fourth place finish with a time of 50.35 seconds while Alexandra Turvey earned her third National Runner Up finish of the week in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 49.56 seconds, highlighting the Sagehens four All-American finishes in the event. 
 
In the 200 breaststroke, Emmie Appl earned a 10th place finish with a time of 2:16.99 to cap off her junior campaign. 
 
The Sagehens biggest moment of the night came in the 400 freestyle relay with all eyes on lane four. The Sagehens won the 200 freestyle earlier in the week and were the favorite coming into the night with the top seed time of 3:22.80. The team of Sabrina Wang, Alexandra Turvey, Katie Gould, and Valerie Mello put together a thrilling performance, pulling off a nail-biting come from behind victory, touching the wall in 3:20.59 to end the 2024 NCAA Division III Championships with their second set of gold NCAA Championship trophies.
 
Prelim Results
The Sagehens lit up the field in the 100 free, earning four second swims in the event with Alexandra Turvey leading the way with the second fastest time of the day at 49.81 seconds. Valerie Mello joins Turvey in the Championship final with a sixth place seed time of 50.58 seconds. Sabrina Wang comfortably made her way into the consolation final with a time of 51.14 seconds while Francesca Coppo had to fight through a swim off to make her way in, earning the 16th spot with a seed time of 51.39 seconds. Katie Gould (51.55), Chesna Pelka (51.70), and Maren Rusk (52.11) all showed well in the 100 free as well, joining the long list of swimmers representing the Sagehens in the event. 
 
Emmie Appl swam a strong race in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:18.07 to make her way into tonight's consolation final. Bennett Jones led the way for the Sagehens in the 1650 free, swimming a 17:24.39, which stands as the 16th fastest time of the day with one more heat to go in tonight's evening session. Abby Raclaw swam a strong race as well for the Sagehens in the mile, touching the wall in 17:28.06. 
 
The Sagehens closed out the prelim session with a dominant performance from Sabrina Wang, Alexandra Turvey, Katie Gould, and Valerie Mello in the 400 free relay, swimming a combined time of 3:22.80 which leads the field by .56 seconds heading into the Championship final.
