Sagehens Win 200 Free Relay on Day Two of NCAA Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's swim and dive team had another successful morning prelim session on Day Two of the NCAA Swim and Dive Championships. The Sagehens top performances came in the 100 fly and 200 free relay, earning top seeds in both events. Pomona-Pitzer also earned second swims in the 400 IM, setting up an evening session that will feature the 200 free relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, and 400 medley relay. In the team race, the Sagehens enter the Day Two finals with 45 points, sitting in sixth overall with NYU (71 points) and MIT (69 points) just ahead in fourth and fifth. 

The Pomona-Pitzer women's swim and dive team earned their first NCAA Championship Crown of the 2024 NCAA Division III Swim and Dive Championships on Thursday evening. Pomona-Pitzer claimed the 200 free relay NCAA Title by over a second, claiming the women's first National Championship Title since the 1983-84 season. Alexandra Turvey swam her way to another National Runner Up finish on Day Two of the Championships, this time in the 100 butterfly. 
 
Finals Results
Pomona-Pitzer's biggest moment of the evening came in the first event of the Championship finals in the 200 freestyle relay. The Sagehens entered as the top seed overall and didn't disappoint, dropping .71 seconds in the National Championship race to touch the wall 1.06 seconds faster than second place Denison, claiming the 2024 NCAA Division III National Championship in the 200 freestyle relay. The Sagehens National Championship performance came by way of Sabrina Wang, Alexandra Turvey, Francesca Coppo, and Valerie Mello with the team combining for a time of 1:31.54. 
 
The Sagehens picked up valuable points in the 400 IM with Bennett Jones and Emmie Appl taking 11th and 12th with times of 4:25.33 and 4:26.35 to earn Honorable Mention All-American honors. 
 
Alexandra Turvey earned her second National Runner Up finish at this year's NCAA Championships, taking second overall with a time of 53.62 seconds. The silver medal finish comes just over an hour after Turvey helped her team secure the National Championship Title in the 200 free relay. 
 
The Sagehens closed out the Day Two action with an eighth place performance from Gabby Calvi, Francesca Coppo, Abby Smith, and Valerie Mello combining for a time of 3:48.11, earning the crew All-American honors. 

Prelim Results
The Sagehens 200 free relay team of Sabrina Wang, Alexandra Turvey, Francesca Coppo, and Valerie Mello combined for a time of 1:32.25, earning the top seed in tonight's final by .65 seconds. In the 400 IM, Bennett Jones and Emmie Appl earned spots in the consolation finals with Jones swimming a 4:25.47 and Appl swimming a 4:26.34 with the duo sitting in 10th and 13th. The Sagehens saw Alexandra Turvey storm to the finish in the 100 fly, dropping .19 seconds off her entry time to take first in the prelim with a time of 53.57 seconds. Abby Smith earned a second swim as well, sitting in 10th going into the consolation final with a time of 55.34 seconds. 
 
In the 200 free, Maren Rusk led the way for Pomona-Pitzer, earning a 24th place finish with a time of 1:52.36 while Abby Raclaw swam 1:54.13 to take 41st. Sabrina Wang rounded out the Sagehens' efforts in the event, swimming a 1:54.45 to take 46th overall. 
 
The Sagehens 400 medley relay team of Gabby Calvi, Francesca Coppo, Abby Smith, and Valerie Mello made their way into the Championship final this evening with a time of 3:46.74, sitting in eighth place heading into the final.
