MONTEREY PARK, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's swim and dive swam their way to the 2024 SCIAC Championship Title on Sunday evening, winning their fifth Title in the last eight years and their 24th Title in program history. JP Gowdy and his staff were named the SCIAC Women's Swim and Dive Coaching Staff of the Year.
Alexandra Turvey earned her third-straight SCIAC Swimmer of the Year after a dominant performance all weekend for the Sagehens.
Bennett Jones was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year for the Sagehens, adding to Pomona-Pitzer's success this weekend. The Sagehens ended the meet with 1,024 team points, surging past the CMS Athenas (911 points) on Day Three and putting the exclamation point on their victory on the final day of competition.
Meet Highlights
The Sagehens started the night with a strong performance from
Bennett Jones in the 1650 free, fighting through a steady race to take second with a time of 17:11.27. In the 200 back,
Alanna Baker took second overall with a time of 2:06.50 with
Abbey Liao taking sixth in 2:08.83. Pomona-Pitzer was overpowering in the 100 free with
Alexandra Turvey winning with a scorching time of 49.83 seconds with
Valerie Mello (50.44),
Chesna Pelka (51.23), and
Sabrina Wang (51.36) taking second through fourth.
Katie Gould and
Francesca Coppo also contributed to the Sagehens 100 free dominance with the duo taking sixth and eighth with time of 51.71s seconds and 52.24 seconds.
In the 200 breast,
Emmie Appl was crowned the champion after turning in a 2:20.79 to earn the gold. In the 200 fly,
Abby Smith dropped 3.43 seconds to claim the championship with a time of 2:02.40 with
Asha Bansal taking third in 2:04.52. The Sagehens flew to the finish line in the 400 free relay as
Alexandra Turvey,
Katie Gould,
Chesna Pelka, and
Valerie Mello combined for a time of 3:21.64, nearly seven seconds faster than second place CMS who touched in 3:28.54.
