Box Score PARKLAND, WA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team opened up their 2021 campaign with a 68-46 win on the road at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday night at Olson Auditorium.
The Sagehens were led by first-year Kayla Hankins who led the team with 12 point and 13 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double. Fellow first-year Allison Murphy came off the bench. With 10 points while Emily Church and Madison Quan each added nine points to the Sagehens' total in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer played some exceptional defense against the Lutes as they held them to 28.1% from the field and just 16.7% from three. The Sagehens also held the Lutes under 10 points in two quarter and only surrendered 13 points in the second half.
How It Happened
The Sagehens got out to a good start as they took an early 7-2 lead, but the Lutes battled back in the first and took their first lead of the game at 10-9 before the Sagehens ended the first quarter with a basket from Amara Chidom to take a 12-10 lead after the first quarter of play.
The second quarter saw the most action of the day with the two teams combining for 44 points. Both teams stayed within three points of each other for the entire second quarter, but Pacific Lutheran heated up from the floor as they shot 50% from the field in the second and hit on three of their seven three-point attempts to outscore the Sagehens 23-21 with the teams tied at 33-33 heading into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer took over in the second half and came out of halftime to immediately break the game open in the third quarter. The Sagehens tightened up their defense and held the Lutes to just four points in the third quarter while a big quarter from Quan, who scored seven points in the third quarter alone, led the Sagehens to a 50-37 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Sagehens continued building their lead throughout the fourth quarter and cruised to a big opening day win on the road.
