Women Swim & Dive: Sagehens Win 11 Events in Victory Over Bulldogs

REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Swim and Dive Team out-paced the University of Redlands on Saturday afternoon, winning the dual meet 166-67. The Sagehens outperformed the Bulldogs for most of the meet, taking first place in 11 out of 13 events. Kirsten Mortimer and Anna Newman stood out at the meet, being the only athletes to win two events individually.

Emma van der Veen kicked off the diving events with a first place finish in the 3-meter dive, scoring at 258.20. She followed up with a second-place finish in the 1-meter at 246.60, just 3.30 points behind the event-winner Sami Scarano.

In the first race, the 400 Yard Medley Relay, the Sagehens took the top spot as the A Team consisting of Sarah Jin, Mackenzie Cummings, Sabrina Kwan, and Maddie Kauahi clocked in at 4:00.26. The B Team featuring Alex Seidel, Erin Bigus, Mikaela Nishida, and Allison Liu followed in second at 4:12.44

Mortimer earned her first of two victories in the 200 Freestyle, clocking in at 2:01.29 while Kauahi finished in second at 2:02.76. She would win again at the 100 Freestyle, clocking in at 55.75.

The 50 Freestyle ended with a tight finish as Emily Waddell edged out teammate Alex Seidel by 0.20 seconds. Waddell came in first at 25.44 while Seidel clocked in at 25.64.

In the following event, the 400 Individual Medley, Anna Newman took the top spot at 4:48.83, more than three seconds ahead of second place finisher, Olivia Cano of Redlands. Newman would later win the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:23.53, more than eight seconds ahead of teammate Katherine Lauerman (5:32.46) who finished right behind her.

Sabrina Kwan won the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:11.94 while Mikaela Nishida followed in second at 2:16.80. In the 200 Backstroke, Angela Ling triumphed in first at 2:11.38 while Sarah Jin took runner-up at 2:14.74. Cummings closed out the individual events with a victory in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:28.21.

In the final event of the afternoon, the 400 Freestyle Relay, the Sagehens took the top two spots. Team A consisting of Kate Denend, Seidel, Hannah Zurmuhl, and Kauahi crossed in first at 3:36.55. Team B which featured Denise Dao, Jin, Kwan, and Mortimer, took second at 3:43.31

Up Next: The Sagehens will return home to host Cal Lutheran and Caltech on Saturday, February 3 at 10:30 a.m.
